紀伊半島の「鬼ヶ城」で見た岩の表面の無数の凹み。当時は、岩にもともとある柔らかい部分が侵食されたのだと思っていたのですが、塩が関与していたとは、そしてタフォニ（Tafoni）という用語があることも初めて知りました。
「塩水に面した岩の多い岸辺を探索すると、塩風化の事例に遭遇することがあります。塩水が細孔や亀裂に浸透すると、蒸発して塩の結晶が堆積することがあります。結晶の成長と膨張により、岩石は弱くなり、砕け散って、ここに示すような空洞が形成されることがあります」：
Exploring rocky saltwater coastlines, you'll likely find examples of salt weathering. When salt water seeps into pores/cracks, it may evaporate and deposit salt crystals within them. Growth and expansion of the crystals may weaken and break the rock apart to form cavities such as those shown here!
