現地時間 6月24日18時過ぎ（日本時間 25日07時過ぎ）、南米北部のベネズエラ･ボリバル共和国で M7.2（深さ 20.3km） と M7.5（深さ 10.0km）の地震が 39秒間隔でほぼ同じ震央で発生し、首都カラカスも激しい揺れ（Violent Shaking）に襲われました。報道によれば深刻な人的･物的被害が出ており、米国地質調査所（USGS）では、死者数が 1万人を超える可能性もあるとしています：

なお、これらの地震の25分後には、日本の岩手県沖で M6.9、震源の深さ約 50km、最大震度6強の地震が起きています。
